Iraq qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup
Iraq defeated Bolivia 2–1 in the intercontinental playoff, becoming the 48th and final team to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. This will be Iraq’s first World Cup appearance since 1986, ending a 40-year wait.
All 48 teams confirmed for the tournament
The lineup for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is now complete with 48 teams—the largest in history (previously 32). The tournament will be hosted by USA, Canada, and Mexico and will feature 104 matches.
Italy fail to qualify again
Four-time champions Italy have failed to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time, losing in the playoffs to Bosnia & Herzegovina. The result shocked fans and triggered criticism of the Italian football system.
Ticket sales begin for World Cup matches
FIFA has started new phases of ticket sales, with millions of tickets available for matches across host cities. The tournament is expected to attract record-breaking crowds.
The 2026 World Cup has been awarded to 48 teams. The grouping and schedule were finalized after the European and intercontinental play-offs last night. The World Cup will begin on June 11 in Mexico City with the Mexico-South Africa match. The first phase will end on June 28. The knockout phase will begin on that day. The last 32, last 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals will be followed by the final on July 19.
