NEW YORK — On Tuesday night in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals, New York defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 115-104 in overtime thanks to a comeback from a 22-point deficit in the fourth quarter led by Jalen Brunson, who finished with 38 points. This was one of the NBA's greatest postseason comebacks.

The Knicks were trailing 93-71 with 7:52 remaining in their 40-minute game against the Cavaliers after a record-breaking run through the first two rounds. With 19 seconds left in regulation, Brunson tied the score at 101-all after persistently attacking James Harden to start an 18-1 run that turned the game into a ballgame.

Prior to that, Brunson stated that even if the Knicks lost the first game, they should just finish strong so they would have momentum for Game 2.

He said, "Just keep fighting." "Continue chipping away. We will not be able to reclaim it in one possession.

A wild crowd in Madison Square Garden yelled and danced in the aisles as the Knicks went on a 9-0 run to start overtime. The Knicks are just three victories away from making their first trip to the NBA Finals since 1999.

Three Knicks, including OG Anunoby, who struggled the most of his comeback after missing two games due to a strained right hamstring, scored 13 points, while Mikal Bridges added 18.

Before their late collapse, the Cavaliers appeared to be headed for a third consecutive road victory thanks to Donovan Mitchell's 29 points. The Knicks scored more than

That can’t happen. But it did," Mitchell said. "We play in two days. We can’t sit here and let it kill our momentum, kill what we’ve been doing. It’s not a good loss.”

The Knicks came from 20 points behind three times last year in the postseason. Those were their largest comebacks on record since 1969-70, when they won their first of two NBA titles.

Evan Mobley had 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Cavs. Harden also scored 15 points, but was just 1 for 8 on 3-pointers and had more turnovers (six) than field goals (five).

NEW YORK — By the time the Cavs left Madison Square Garden late Wednesday afternoon, following a practice session that coach Kenny Atkinson characterized more like a “shootaround,” they had already turned the page on the Game 1 collapse.

But before that, at the team hotel in downtown Manhattan, they had to relive it all — the good and bad — with a film session that included plenty of video clips from a disastrous fourth quarter in which Cleveland was on the wrong end of a historic 22-point turnaround in the final 7:52.

The Cavs lost the series opener, 115-104. Game 2 is Thursday night in New York at 8 p.m.
