Why did the Kurds in Iran form an alliance at this time?

Members of the Iranian Kurdistan Democratic Party were also given military training near Erbil in the Kurdistan region of Iraq,

Leaders of Kurdish groups in northern Iraq who oppose the Iranian regime have told the BBC that they have plans to cross the border into Iran, but that they have not yet carried out their plans.

The plan to enter Iran is not new, they say, but has been in the works for decades. However, they strongly deny that their fighters have already crossed into Iranian territory.

"We have been preparing for this for the past 47 years since the establishment of the Islamic Republic," Hana Yazdanbana of the Kurdistan Freedom Party told the BBC's Orla Gerin. But she insisted that "not a single fighter has advanced yet".

She was referring to fighters who "face death".

Yazdanbana explained that six opposition groups, which recently formed a political and military alliance called the "Alliance of Political Forces of Iranian Kurdistan", are coordinating their activities.

"No one is acting alone. We will know when our brothers take action," he said.

He added that he did not expect the fighters to advance this week; any move would depend first and foremost on the ongoing air campaign.

"We cannot advance unless the airspace above us is clear, and we must destroy the (Iranian) regime's arsenal—otherwise it would be a suicide attempt," he added, adding, "This regime is extremely brutal, and our most advanced weapon is the Kalashnikov rifle."
